Why hire a Professional Makeup Artist for your Wedding?

As Makeup Artists, we are a little biased, of course you should hire us!  But, beyond that, we get lots of questions about what benefits there are to using a professional to do your makeup for your big day...so we are going to try and debunk some of the most commonly asked questions!

1.  What to look for in a Makeup Artist for your Wedding Day:

a.  We think personality is SOOOO important in the hiring of vendors for your wedding day.  If you don't click personality wise with your makeup artist, are you really going to want to spend your entire wedding morning with them?  Of course, you want them to be talented & knowledgeable, but beyond that, you should hire someone that you feel comfortable working with and you have fun with!  Getting glam on your big day should be fun, not a chore.

2.  We get this all the time: "My girlfriend is really good with makeup, so she is just gonna do it for me."

a.  That's great!  But are you confident that you are going to get exactly what you want, and not what your girlfriend thinks you should get?  Also, when you are not paying someone for their work, it can be more difficult to be critical of their work.  After all, you don't want to hurt her feelings and she's doing you a favor right?  Does your girlfriend know what products will photograph best in natural light?  In artificial light?  Indoors?  Outdoors? Does she know what products are light-reflective? How about blendable and easy to touch up vs. those that are really durable and probably will last for you from the time you get ready, through your ceremony, Unless your girlfriend has done your makeup for you for countless times before and you have been photographed with that makeup on, you may want to consider hiring a professional that has all the answers and will take criticism well so that you can ensure you get exactly what you want!

3.  You charge THAT much just to do my makeup for my wedding day??

a.  The average wedding in the US now costs over $20,000!  Our cost for bridal makeup, including your trial is less than $200 for the bride.  That makes it less than 1% of your total budget for your big day.  It is not uncommon for the bride & groom to $3000-5000 for their photographer for their big day.  Make sure you look your absolute best in those pics!  Remember you are going to be looking at them for the rest of your lives together!  TRUST US, no one will remember the table linens once they leave, but they will remember how you looked!  Its the first thing people always say about a bride:  "Didn't she look BEAUTIFUL!"  Make sure that's what your guests are saying about you when they leave...Also, think about the time that we spend with our brides:  we do a trial (sometimes more than one) to iron out all the details, we have to design contracts and paperwork, we often have to pack our kit to travel, travel time, set up time, the actual time to do your makeup, clean up time, etc.  When you calculate all the details in, hair & makeup people are probably the most reasonable vendors you can hire for your big day!

4.  I never really wear makeup, so I don't think I really need someone to do it for my wedding day.

a.  Actually, this is the perfect reason to hire someone!  We do brides all the time who don't normally wear a lot of makeup (sometimes none).  You don't normally wear a big white dress either, so believe us you need to dress your face up a bit.  I am not saying if you usually don't wear anything, lets jump right into FULL COVERAGE foundation and SMOKY EYES...no no no.  But a little something to make you look polished and pretty.  We can do sheer foundation, a little blush, a little something to make those eyes pop!, and define your lips a bit.  A little can go a long way!  The dress should by all means be the focus, but you will need to do something with your hair and makeup to be sure your dress shines!

5.  I want to wear a lot of makeup becuase I really want to look great in photographs.

a.  We want you to look great in photographs too, but we also want your groom to recognize you as you walk down the aisle.  There is a definate balance when doing wedding makeup:  we want you to look perfect in all your pics, but also great up-close for all of those congratulatory kisses!  The last thing you want is for your makeup to look like a mask up close.  So, how do we achieve this balance?  Practice, practice, practice!  The Parleur Girls have done hundreds of brides for their big day, and each time we do, we learn a little something new.  The trials also make a great "practice run"...after wearing the makeup for the day, we expect feedback like: "The foundation got really shiny after a few hours" or "My eyeshadow didn't budge for the whole day!"....the more feedback we get, the more we can make your makeup work for you.  I always tell my clients, "You are not going to hurt my feelings, so by all means, let me hear your feedback!"  Sometimes the first time I meet a client is the day I am doing her trial...so it may take an additional trial to get it just right...its only makeup so its easy to wash off, or tweak to get it just the way you like it!

6.  Should my bridesmaids all get their makeup done too?  Should they look the same or different?

a.  Of course they should!  How much fun is it for you and your best buds to get dolled up together??  Plus, save yourself the stress of what to get them as a bridesmaid gift, by taking care of their beauty services as their gift.  DOUBLE BONUS!  Not only will they love you for it, you can be sure that they will all look great in your photos!  We can design a beauty plan that incorporates each of their individual styles while still making them look cohesive as a group.  Your artist will meet with you (the bride) ahead of time and work out all of those details, so when the big day comes, we can help make your bridal party look their best!

7.  What about my groom?  He is not very girlie, but I think a little grooming might help...

a.  Lets be honest here.  Lots of great guys out there could use a little help in the grooming department.  Does he rock a uni-brow?  No prob, we can get rid of it lickety-split.  We can even cover those stress pimples that show up on the wedding day (in a VERY masculine way OF COURSE) and get those wonky nose hairs taken care of...

8.  Will you guys come to us for my big day?

a.  Yep Yep!  We travel on-location all the time.  We are happy to come to the location of your choice to make it a little easier on you.  But keep in mind, we have a great space that we can make private for you on your big day.  We will order in breakfast for you if you like, you can hook your ipod up to our sound system so you can listen to all your favorite jams, have your photographer shoot some getting ready shots for you in the studio (which photographs beautifully btw) and once you are done, you don't even have to clean up your mess, we will take care of everything!  If your wedding is somewhat close to The Parleur, gettting ready here is the way to go!
